The Cariboo-Chilcotin School District is on the beautiful traditional and unceded territories of the Secwepemc, Tsilhqot'in, and Dakelh Nations. Our District is fortunate to work with the Three Nations of the area which to serve approximately 1400 Indigenous students and their families. The department is led by the District Principal of Indigenous Education with the Director of Instruction. The mandate of the department is to ensure the success of Indigenous students and help the District act to further Truth and Reconciliation.  students. 

The Indigenous Education Council (IEC) is a self-governing council that includes representatives from one Dakelh Band, five Secwepemc Bands, and six Tsilhqot̓’in Bands, the Cariboo-Chilcotin Metis Association, Cariboo Friendship Society, and non-voting district employees.  The role of the IEC is to support the board to provide comprehensive and equitable education and support services for Indigenous students and improve Indigenous student outcomes.  This includes advising on the appropriate integration of Indigenous worldviews and perspectives, advising on grants in relation to Indigenous students, and ensuring respect for local First Nations in who territories SD #27 operates.

Our District holds Local Education Agreements with many of the First Nations communities. The District, the Provincial Ministry of Education, and First Nations communities have signed Enhancement Agreements to continue to work as a team to improve the education of First Nation students.
